The 2010 "State of the Brewery" Address
Friends,
Subscribers, Countrymen, lend me your ears...
Let me take
the time to tell you about the future.
No, not the kind of future involving hover-cars, sex robots or routine
trips to Mars, just the immediate future as it applies to your local brewery.
As we at The Four Peaks Brewing Company gaze with all the hope and promise that
the dawn of a new decade brings, we should recap what's been accomplished this
past year as it holds the key to our collective tomorrow.
As 2009
began we continued to pour the last drops of 2008 in what we called our Sirius
Black Russian Imperial Porter, at that time the latest incarnation of our infamous Winter
Wobbler. As of this moment, we
are once again ready to dazzle the public with our Sirius Black, this time aged
in a Four Roses Bourbon Barrel, at the 2010 Arizona Strong Beer Festival on
Saturday, February 13th (tickets available HERE). That will be just one of the many varieties of beer we will have available at this year's festival, we know we can count on you to be there to show your support for us and all of this year's participants.
On May 5th
of last year the very first cans of Kilt Lifter rolled off of our new canning line
(with Sunbru following a week later) and we haven't looked back since. Soon thereafter the Arizona State Legislature
passed laws allowing the capacity of local brewpubs, such as ourselves, to
increase yearly production. As a result
we've acquired larger equipment and storage units to insure that you, our
friends and neighbors, shall not go without your favorite micro brews ever
again. It is a long process playing
catch up to the weeks we've since lost due to upgrading and facilitating the
implementation of this equipment, but let me assure you that the wait will soon
be over and your patience has been appreciated.
As the
first quarter of 2010 starts to build up steam we look forward to the introduction
of our new seasonal, the Double Knot, on Friday, February 5th, our upcoming
Cheese Puff Day on February 10th, a historic President's Day, Spring Training Baseball and all the fans that it brings, expectations of another successful St. Patrick's Day along with our time honored T-Shirt Giveaway (of
which the artwork is currently underway on) and another classic Easter Sunday Buffet
that any mother would be proud of. Keeping
this momentum at a fever pitch we are preparing our very first Beer Dinner of
2010 on Tuesday, March 9th. Yes, if you
took the time and effort to read this far into my ramblings you are among the
first to be privy to this information.
The full menu, as well as its beer accompaniment, will be unveiled in
next weeks edition of our Brewsletter so don't miss it. Tickets will go on sale at that time for a
very affordable $65 per person, but be aware that this beer dinner will be
restricted to only 80 lucky individuals.
This is just the start of a year that will soon go down in the annals of 4PBC history as the beginning of one of the most creative, innovative, important and mind-blowing epochs of our existence. Each and every one of you out there is invited to come along with us on this journey towards our very own Oompah-Loompa Door to the Future!
I will now turn the floor over to my friends and associates, the Brewers and the Grill & Tap, to elaborate on the current states of our Brew Floor and our Scottsdale location as the "Winds
of Change" continue to blow...

The Brewers Blog
We're sure you've all heard about the dust-up between ASU and the SanTan Brewpub. It was in all the papers and all over the TV. Basically, as we see it, San Tan's owner, Anthony Canecchia, misappropriated the name "Sun Devil" to name his Sun Devil Ale. ASU, doing due diligence on protecting their property, asked Anthony to cease and desist, twice. He refused. A third letter finally convinced Anthony to relent using a name he does not own. Somehow this qualified him for victim status, which lead Anthony (always the avid self-promoter) to hire a public relations firm to tell his David and Goliath story. In a way its genius; any publicity is good publicity, as they say, and the press just loves a good "little guy" story.
We think all of that is just peachy. We certainly know what it's like to get a cease and desist order over naming rights. Our problem is with some terminological inexactitudes (our Mother would call them "fibs") and some snarky accusations from Anthony that have reached the blogosphere.
It
should be said that we think Anthony's a swell guy, heck, it could be
said that we taught him all he knows about brewing professionally, but we won't. He did work here as an assistant under Andy Ingram for about six years. Although if you read some AZCentral articles and New Times articles you would be under the impression that Anthony was, "the Brewmaster at Four Peaks for ten years" (AZCentral.com Dec. 13, 2007). Now, we can't blame Anthony for that, sometimes reporters don't hear correctly and misprints happen, right?
Anyway, at the risk of sounding like we're making mountains out of molehills,
the thing that we question about all of this is that if Anthony was
using the Sun Devil name for "10 to 15 years", as he said in a recent State Press article, wouldn't it have been used here? Prior to his termination, not once was the name Sun Devil Ale mentioned or suggested by Anthony nor were any samples of his homebrew offered. We just question his timing.
In another article he said he's been using the name since he opened San
Tan but to the best of our recollection the first time we saw the name
used publicly was at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival just under a year ago.
Why would we know this and why would we care? Well this is about the time that the ASU Alumni Association approached us to brew a beer that could be used at various alumni functions and in return, proceeds would be donated to the Alumni Association, it seemed like a great idea being that two of Four Peaks' owners are actual alumni.
So, why has it taken until now for our beer to
be released? Well, because we did the right thing when dealing with
ASU and made sure none of the names and images of our beer would be
directly associated with ASU and their trademarks. This took time and a little research. In the end we came up with Devil's Pitchfork Pale Ale. We won't lie, we would have loved to use ASU's trademarked images and names because of their impact and recognition but it was at their request that we not. They are rightfully protective when it comes to their image and we've bent over backwards to respect that. What sort of galls us is the insinuation by Anthony that it, "seems serendipitous timing that the lawsuit against us [San Tan] and the launch of their new beer... it just seems profit driven" (State Press Jan. 2010). This could not be farther from the truth; first, the beer is in essence a charity beer, second, we've been working on this for ten months, and third, somehow Four Peaks Brewing Co. and profiteering don't quite go together. It's a cheap shot to say the least, but let's be clear; we have no animosity toward Anthony or San Tan. We understand he must be frustrated for not doing his homework on this, but we're not the ones at which to lash out.
Another thing that seems to be troubling Anthony is that, "they have a Devil's Pitchfork that uses a pitchfork in their logo... but it was specifically stated in their letter to us [San Tan] that we had to stop...the use of Sun Devil on any alcoholic product and the visual representation of any pitchfork image" (State Press Jan. 2010). First, "devil's" and "pitchfork" are not "Sun Devil" and they are not copyrighted by ASU, so they were able to be used and copyrighted by us.
Second, we can use the pitchfork image as long as it is not identical
to the one ASU uses (specifically the one Sparky is holding in the
logo). It took all of about five minutes in a meeting with them to
find that out.
There are still a few hurdles to cross with Devil's Pitchfork Pale Ale but we're certain that we can work with the Alumni Association and the Board of Regents to iron out any wrinkles. They seem far from "Michael Crow's Empire", as Anthony calls them. They are just some good folks trying to raise some money and protect what's theirs. To us, it's being fast and loose with the facts for your own promotion that can seem, well, a little devilish.

The Grill & Tap Dispatch with Mike Kruchko
Well, the New Orleans Saints beat
the Minnesota Vikings this weekend after Brett Favre decided to retire during
the final drive of the fourth quarter. Okay,
I couldn't help myself, but they say comedy is the best medicine and I know a
whole lot of Viking fans out there that need it! While we wait for Mr. Favre to decide his
future and the fate of his team (yet again), I am finding myself in a similar
boat. Over the last 13+ months, yours
truly has given some of his best (and not so best) columns to America's favorite Brewsletter.
Over the last few months our go to guy in Scottsdale, Dave Tanzi, has stepped up to the plate when the Dispatch
has needed him and always knocked it out of the park. As much as I would love to say that my
writings have been picked up by the New Yorker to share with the rest of the
world, the simple fact is that the public has spoken and the torch is being
passed. So what does this mean to you (other
than missing my witty humor)? Nothing
really, we will still be showcasing all the great pictures that the FourPeaks faithful submit for "Show Us Your Cans" as well as keeping
you up to date on all the activities of note in the Four Peaks
Scottsdale world.
As for this weeks installment we
find ourselves in Europe enjoying the old world feel of Seville, Spain. Jeff Garelick from
Chandler took a great pic from The Cathedral of Seville which is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church in
the world. In the background we see the
Alcazar of Seville, a royal palace that was originally constructed in 915
AD. Once again we see that great craft
beer not only knows no geographical boundaries, but it also loves great
historical places! Thanks for the great
work Jeff, we would have loved to have been there with you!

That'll do it for this week (and for me). Remember, just because Dave will be taking
over it doesn't mean I won't still be a part of the Dispatch; so keep those
photos coming! Thanks everyone for the
past year of support and I look forward to seeing what Dave has in store for
all of us!

Final Musings...
Just a couple of things before I let you get on with your day.
The Scottish Highland Games are coming up in a little over a month (February 27th and 28th) and Four Peaks is once again proud to be sponsoring this event. Tickets are now available on their website HERE There is plenty of fun for all ages and I will be giving you more details as the time draws nearer.
Finally, if your looking for a truly inspirational story I sincerely recommend you tune in to "Live
for the Moment," a one-hour special from Emmy Award winners Jeff Probst
and Mark Burnett about making time for what is most important in life. It
will be broadcast Thursday, January 28 at 7 pm Arizona Time and is about Roger Childs, a gentleman living with ALS, and his family. The show reveals what inspired Roger Childs, who is active with The ALS
Association's Rocky Mountain Chapter, to live life to the fullest after
he was diagnosed with ALS three years ago. Four Peaks has been involved with the folks at the ALS Association for several years now and would hope that if you have the time, tune in.
